Key West is known as the Southernmost City in the United States. The term "Key West" derives from the spanish phrase "Cayo Hueso" meaning "island of bones". It was so named by the early Spaniards who upon landing on the island found human bones strewn along the shoreline - remnants of ancient native american battles. The english speaking people hearing "Cayo Hueso" mistook it to mean Key West. A more recent name given the island is "Conch Republic", the nation-name adopted by Key West elders following the island's succession from the United States in the early 1980's.
